Often times we think of listening as hearing what someone says.  Sometimes when we listen, we hear the words and a voice, but we don't compute what the person is saying.  Other times we do more than listen; we respond and interact, actually paying attention and understanding the conversation.  However, rarely do we truly listen to someone else; truly hear what they have to say.  We don't listen in an emotional sense, only in the physical.  I'm guilty of this, as well as everyone else.

My reasoning of this result is because we idly use our words.  Some of us have no purpose in talking other than just to talk.  This causes us to start ignoring what is being said because we think the words being spoken have no meaning, often times forgetting that the person speaking is meaningful.  Not to say that what they're saying isn't stupid or anything, but the way they feel is that the only way they can gain recognition is if they talk all the time.  Sadly, there are a lot of people like this.

What about the people who don't speak; the ones who choose to stay silent?  Are they shy and timid, equating speaking to someone new a daunting task?  Are they slow, their brains not functioning in a manner that is considered normal for the average human being?  Are they jaded and alone, having experienced too much to think that anyone cares about what they have to say?  Or are they wise, knowing that each word spoken should hold importance and not be used ignorantly and foolishly?

Words are important; they are a means of communication from one person to another.  They are used each and every day, all hours of the day.  They are used to formulate thoughts and speech; to give each individual a name to go by and answer to.  Words should not be used carelessly or be taken lightly, for each word and name has meaning behind it.

Writers know the importance of words; they understand their meanings.  They formulate ideas and thoughts, using each letter to bring life to what they feel and have imagined.  They bring worlds into existence to their readers; implant thoughts into the minds of critics; they give a spark- a thrill- a hope.  They also open a gateway into their minds, revealing a part of themselves to those who take the time to read what they have to say.  Writers reveal to readers a piece of their souls.

As a lover of words, I try to keep mine close.  I try not to use them needlessly and I try not to waste them.  I try to keep watch of my words, not wanting to wound an individual, nor be ignored because of idle chatter.  I try to speak when spoken to and I try to write when ideas strike.  I try to use my words with caution for I have been wounded many a time by them.  I know that they can be used for destruction; poisoning the mind and soul.  However, I also know that they can be virtuous; bringing life, love, and hope.

Words aren't words alone; words are tools as much as they are weapons.  Only a person can decide if they wish to build someone up with their words, tear them down with them, or not use their words at all.  All words hold weight, whether we want them to or not.

Now that I have said what I wanted to say, I just have a simple question to ask you:

What do words mean to you?

So, what do words mean to you?  I'm curious to see what you all think.
